Boxing Day Blues

Boxing day is traditionally a big movie day for Aussies, kind of like the 4th of July weekend in the states. They usually release massive mainstream films as well as a slew of credible flicks that are generating oscar buzz.

This years releases are disappointing to say the least. Below are the films released today most bar two are makes with want to skip the movies and get my drink on!

The Tourist
If the trailer of movie staring arguably to of the biggest stars in the world is boring as batshit you can only imagine how bad the film will be. Word of the street is that is a overdrawn, not very interesting caper that even Johnny Depp can't save.

Meet the Parents: Little Fockers
I'm guessing the Fockers at the movie studio thought audiences were too stupid to realise "Little Fockers" is the second sequel to the slap stick "comedy" franchise. Or perhaps they know exactly the type of audience who is willing to pay $18 to watch essentially the same film with the same jokes and a older, bored looking cast, and realise that they probably wouldn't understand the subtly of the title "Little Fockers". Thank god they added the line "Meet the Parents" to the name of the film to assure audiences that they are in fact not just watching tired retread of a previously made film but the next "story" in the "Meet the Parents" arc.

Gulliver's Travel
Jack Black used to make good movies I swear, well at least interesting movies. This film makes me wonder what happened to the part of his brain that used to say no to bad films.

It's not all dire there are at least two decent films release to the public today:

Somewhere
If you have been reading this blog you know my thoughts of Somewhere. This is a interesting look into the life of a lonely Hollywood movie star. Great music, beautiful cinematography, funny moments, well rounded characters and amazing performances.

Blue Valentine
A deep look into the relationship of a couple played by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling.
The film centers on a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods. Oscar Bait? Who cares it's good!

Opening Ceremony Interviews Sofia Coppola

I swear this has not become of the 'Somewhere' blog, but this is too good to not share. Frothy fashion brand Opening Ceremony posted an interview with Sofia Coppola where they discuss her latest film and her experiences growing up in Hollywood.

Check it out....

Humberto Leon: I love the title of your movie, Somewhere. Where does it come from?
Sofia Coppola: Thanks. I love Ed Ruscha's work, so was trying to think of something in that spirit, and the idea is that the main character needs to go somewhere else, but doesn't know exactly where. It's the vague idea of somewhere other than where he is right now.

HL: The image you chose for the poster is breathtaking. Can you talk about that image?
SC: That's from one of my favorite moments in the film, where Stephen Dorff's character and Elle Fanning, who plays his daughter, take a day off together around the Chateau Marmont, and hang out by the pool instead of going where they're supposed to. It's their moment of bonding, poolside. You can see a little of a Gucci billboard behind them in the bushes.

HL: I'm a huge fan of [graphic designer] Peter Miles. Have you worked with him before?
SC: Yes, he's great - he did my poster and titles for Lost in Translation and Marie-Antoinette. I love working on projects with him. We're planning to do a little book series.

HL: What are your favorite film posters of all time?
SC: Oh, I love the original Lolita poster, and the ones for Bruce Weber's films.

HL: You have mentioned that Paper Moon served as an influence for this film. Were you a fan of the original Ryan and Tatum O'Neal partnership? In a larger sense, what interests you about a father/daughter relationship?
SC: I loved them in that movie. It's like a buddy movie with a father and daughter. They have a sweet relationship in that it isn't sappy. I based the character on my friend's 12-year-old daughter who adores her dad, but keeps her cool.

HL: Costume design and soundtracks for your films have always been instantly iconic and very reflected. Can you discuss those two elements in this film?
SC: I get into those elements of putting a movie together. I like working with costume designers because I have specific ideas about the characters from when I'm writing it. And I like to listen to music when I'm writing. It helps me get into the mood I want the film to have. A lot of times, some of the songs I listen to when writing end up in the film.

HL: Is there a history or magic to Los Angeles that you tried to tap into?
SC: LA is like nowhere else. I tried to capture the feeling of the place, the light, driving around, the Chateau Marmont where the main character lives. I think that hotel has a romantic and decadent feeling of history.

HL: What is your relationship to the Chateau Marmont? Do you remember when you first visited it?
SC: I vaguely remember going there as a kid, but most of my memories are from hanging out there in my early 20s when I lived in LA and was going to CalArts. The nice parking guy, Ray, is still there. He's in the movie for a second. And I've stayed there over the years. One of my most vivid memories was meeting Helmut Newton in the elevator one morning. He was in a grey sweatsuit coming from the gym. I was excited to meet him because he was a hero of mine, and I was glad to thank him for a photo he had sent me... Then, I left the hotel and when I came back, his car was crashed into the wall at the entrance with flowers around it.

HL: The casting of Stephen Dorff created some waves since he hasn't been thought of as a leading man in some time. What was the idea behind casting Stephen and what was it like working with him?
SC: He came to mind when I was writing this. I met him years ago through a friend. I thought he would be perfect to play this guy. I think he's a great actor and a sweet guy - and that sweetness comes through and helps you want to watch him, otherwise you might not care about this pretty flawed character.

HL: A lot of this film revolves around the young actress, Elle Fanning. What is Elle like, and what other actresses does she remind you of?
SC: She's great, really smart and funny and full of life, and I love that she's a real kid, excited about what she's going to be for Halloween and ballet class.

HL: What are some of your favorite child performances of history?
SC: Ponette - that amazing performance by a 4 year old?Paper Moon, of course. Jodi Foster in Taxi Driver. And I loved the kids in The White Ribbon.

HL: You were the first American female director to win the Golden Lion for this film, which is so exciting. Who is your favorite female director?
SC: Really? I've always loved Jane Campion. And I was inspired by Chantal Ackerman for this film.

Pheonix "Love like a Sunset" - from the new film "Somewhere"

Sofia Coppola uses the Pheonix song "Love like a Sunset" to perfectly convey the isolation of the protagonist Jonny Marco (Stephen Dorff) in her latest film "Somewhere". The fusion of music and cinematography in the movie is flawless. It appears Phoenix puts as much thought into their music as Sofia seemingly does into her filmmaking. Check out the clip below where Pheonix takes us into the process that went into "Love like a Sunset"

Arrested Development the Movie out 2012

After much speculation, false starts and negotiations with it's actors it appears a film based on the epically funny TV series Arrested Development is finally happening.

The last development regard this project was that Michael Cera bailed on the project siting too many other film projects where he plays the awkward kid. Seems like he has had a change of heart and the Bluths will live on!

Two words to describe this news....FUCK YES!

Powerpuff Girls Theme Song Sung By Christian Bale

It appears there is a lot more to the Dark Knight actor than fits of rage directed his cast and crew that he is now know for. There is soft chewy centre which is as sweet as ...well something really sweet.

Watch him and Marky Mark sing the Powerpuff theme song in a recent interview promoting their new film the "Fighter"

Tomorrow When the War Began gets a sequel

Tomorrow fans can breathe a sigh of relief, it seems the success of the locally made teen Sci fi flick has ensured that this local blockbuster is getting a sequel.

Stuart Beatie told reporters at the AfI Awards on Saturday " they've just asked me to write the sequel to Tomorrow, When The War Began"

Despite critics and industry types usually denying gongs for films of this genre, Tomorrow has been cleaning up at the AFI winning "Best Screenplay" among others and the Inside Film awards where it picked up best film.

The sequel would likely be based on the second of the seven books of tomorrow series.

SKINS US

I know this is supposed to be a movie blog but this is too good to not blog about.

So you have probably heard MTV US are making over Skins, everybody has pretty much jumped on the hater bandwagon which I understand the uk version was exceptionally raw, honest and basically fucking awesome. I'm willing to give the creator Brian Esley the benefit of the doubt.

This is the extended 4 minute preview, check it out and let us know what you think.

I do think the acting is a bit average but I am looking forward to see what they can do to it.

Captain America

Chris Evans has been double dipping so to speak, He has already made his mark as the Human Torch in Marvel's tacky Fantastic Four movies now he is about to take on the iconic role of Captain America. Entertainment Weekly has released some images from the upcoming film and I got to say I am loving the retro vibe.

Check them out below..

Thor - Official Trailer HD 1080p

The new Thor trailer was released recently and I can't decide if I am excited or just numb about the prospect of another comic book adaptation.

I was always more of a DC guy so the less famous heros from the Marvel universe never peaked my interests but there is potential for this movie not to completely suck.

Too early to tell based on this short trailer but Natalie Portman's involvement makes the film more intriguing, that being said she was in another well known franchise in the early 2000s which was less than ordinary.

Check out the trailer and let us know your thoughts!

No Strings Attached

I've gone soft. Or maybe I have always been soft. There is a reason for this revelation I actually want to see this Ashton Kutcher led chick flick. Natalie Portman is amazing but I don't think it's a strong enough excuse to warrant looking forward to a film of this calibre. Watch the trailer below and tell me what you think.

The fine song in the trailer is provided courtesy of The Bravery.

French Time Travel and Shit

In anticipation of the impending release of the overdue sequel to the 80s classic TRON I have been listening to the soundtrack by french/robot duo Daft Punk. Instead of conjuring up images of me losing my shit at Daft Punk Alive tour a few years back, this track transports me to a futuristic world in the not to distant future (2012?)

Who new time travel could be so cheap...and french?

The knew movie comes out this Thursday!

Nudity, Love and Other Drugs

I have only had this blog for one day and it as already resorted to this...I give you NUDITY!

Sex sells, well that's what the publicity machine behind Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway's latest effort 'Love and Other Drugs' believe.

These two have been in Australia to promote this new film which to me is Jerry McGuire infused with the elements in film that make me froff. (further explanation check out my somewhere post below)

Besides talking about their great chemistry the two have been blabbing non stop about the film's abundant nudity, cock socks and other nude topics. The fact is the nudity in the film will probably cover some side boobage and a close up of Jake's hairy crack but it seems this is all that is necessary to sell a film.

I'm jumping on the bandwagon, I think hardcore porn, vagina's and hard penises will take this blog where in needs to be in terms of numbers. Unfortunately I am not willing to compromise my integrity just yet (even though I want to) I have included for your viewing pleasure the "nude" promotional pics from their cover shoot for Entertainment Weekly.

For those who can't handle the almost side boobage check out the trailer for the film below.

The trailer contains awesome tracks such as "Beautiful Girl" by Inxs and The Cure's "Just like Heaven"
Film comes out this Thursday 16th December

The 'Transformers: Dark Of The Moon' Teaser Trailer

Can the third instalment of Transformers be any worse than the shit infested, so bad it's offensive, insult to filmmaking sequel?

Knowing Michael Bay films I am sure he is going to try. The teaser trailer came out recently and it doesn't look like the worse thing ever.

Thoughts?

Trailer Mash up!: Angelina From 'Jersey Shore' Replaces Angelina Jolie in The Tourist

So Jersey Shore kind of saved MTV from being a ratings wasteland which is a true indication of the awesome state of society*. Imagine if all great things of the world were "Jersey Shored".

Check out this hilarious trailer mash up from the fine folk at MTV news.

*Does not actually think the state of society is any way, shape or form awesome.

Just Go With It

Sometimes I forget I have a penis and I get excited about movies such this Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler rom com. I laughed out loud twice during the trailer which is monumental because I don't really laugh *seriously.

Check out the trailer and let me know what you think?

Somewhere (trailer HD)

Somewhere is the latest film from Sophia Coppola the visionary that brought us Lost in Translation.

Somewhere is about a hard-living Hollywood actor who re-examines his life after his 11-year-old daughter surprises him with a visit. Starring Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning this film will surely do for Chateau Marmot what Sophia's other movie did for Park Hyatt Tokyo.

The trailer (see below) is a mixture of all the things that make me froff about films. I have a thing for watching protagonists moping around in beautifully stunning locations, who slowly veer towards a journey of self discovery to a epically poignant soundtrack.

Add in the fact that Lost in Translation is one of my favourite films, my soft spot for LA and unequivocal love for all things Phoenix and you get the film I am most likely froth on about for the next few months. Be warned.

Check out the trailer below and hit me up with your thoughts!
