Boxing Day Blues

Boxing day is traditionally a big movie day for Aussies, kind of like the 4th of July weekend in the states. They usually release massive mainstream films as well as a slew of credible flicks that are generating oscar buzz.

This years releases are disappointing to say the least. Below are the films released today most bar two are makes with want to skip the movies and get my drink on!

The Tourist
If the trailer of movie staring arguably to of the biggest stars in the world is boring as batshit you can only imagine how bad the film will be. Word of the street is that is a overdrawn, not very interesting caper that even Johnny Depp can't save.

Meet the Parents: Little Fockers
I'm guessing the Fockers at the movie studio thought audiences were too stupid to realise "Little Fockers" is the second sequel to the slap stick "comedy" franchise. Or perhaps they know exactly the type of audience who is willing to pay $18 to watch essentially the same film with the same jokes and a older, bored looking cast, and realise that they probably wouldn't understand the subtly of the title "Little Fockers". Thank god they added the line "Meet the Parents" to the name of the film to assure audiences that they are in fact not just watching tired retread of a previously made film but the next "story" in the "Meet the Parents" arc.

Gulliver's Travel
Jack Black used to make good movies I swear, well at least interesting movies. This film makes me wonder what happened to the part of his brain that used to say no to bad films.

It's not all dire there are at least two decent films release to the public today:

Somewhere
If you have been reading this blog you know my thoughts of Somewhere. This is a interesting look into the life of a lonely Hollywood movie star. Great music, beautiful cinematography, funny moments, well rounded characters and amazing performances.

Blue Valentine
A deep look into the relationship of a couple played by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling.
The film centers on a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods. Oscar Bait? Who cares it's good!
